STREAMS
Timber Coulee Creek
Wisconsin has over 2,500 trout streams, the majority exhibiting some degree of natural reproduction. The dominant specie is the Brown trout with a few Rainbow trout. There are a number of natural Brook trout streams and the DNR is bringing more miles back into production.
Timber Coulee creek is located in the Coon Valley area in Vernon County. The stream has an estimated 400 pounds of trout per acre. The water is medium in size and is very clear. The stream runs through dairy farms and has very easy access.
Small flies and light lines is the required equipment, hip boots can be used but chest waders will be helpful for crossing the stream in some places. The stream has a good gradient with many pools and riffles. Mayflies and caddis are the flies to use on this stream in the spring and early summer with terrestrials being the flies of choice in late summer and early fall.
West Fork Kickapoo River
The West Fork of the Kickpoo River is located in Vernon County. The 8 miles of catch and release water is centered on the town of Avalanche. The West Fork Sportsman Club is located on the banks of the river just south of the town, this is a place where all the local experts hang out, and is a good place to gain some insight into fishing the river.
The 8 miles of river is Catagory 5 Trout water, which is a no kill/artificials only, but this is not the only water to fish on this river. There is very good water below and above the C/R water. The river is medium in size with many pools and riffles. TU, the West Fork Sportsman Club and FFF clubs have done a lot of stream work on the 8 miles of the C/R water. The West Fork has both wild and stocked fish.
The dominant specie is the Brown Trout with a few Rainbows and Brook trout. The West Fork wanders through farm pastures and has many good access points.
Seas Branch CreeK
Seas Branch joins the West Fork of the Kickpoo River just below the town of Avalanche. The branch has limited access,so you will need to ask permission. Most of the time if you ask, you will be given access.
Brown trout and Brook trout are the fish you will find.
Mill Creek
Mill Creek is located in Richland County and has 3 branches. The main branch is class 5 trout water that is C/R and artificial only. The east and west branches are class 4 trout water. The stream runs through farmland like most all the trout water in southwest Wisconsin. The Brown trout is the dominant species.
Willow Creek
Willow Creek is another Richland County stream. The stream runs through rolling dairy farms and has many pools and riffles. The stream has good Caddis and Mayfly hatches in the spring and early summer, with terrestrials being the flies of choice in late summer and early fall.
The down side of Willow Creek is that the stream will muddy up fast with rain. South of Hwy. N, the stream turns into big Brown trout water; you will not catch a lot of fish but the ones that you do will be large. Willow creek is also the stream that we use for our fly fishing school.
